• Family history of blood cancer           
• Physical inactivity
• Previous cancer treatment - certain types of chemotherapy and radiation therapy  
• Genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome
• Exposure to high levels of radiation
• Exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene
• Certain blood disorders such as myelodysplastic syndromes               
• Smoking increases the risk of acute myelogenous leukemia
