January
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about a cancer that is largely preventable, highly treatable when detected early, and too often overlooked.
Cervical cancer is caused by long-term infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV). With HPV vaccination and regular cervical screening, most cases can be prevented.
Cervical cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages, which is why screening is so important. When detected early, treatment is highly effective.
In Bermuda, cervical cancer is relatively uncommon, but every diagnosis has a significant personal impact, and most cases can be prevented through screening and vaccination.
HPV vaccination saves lives
Regular screening detects changes before cancer develops
Early detection leads to better outcomes
Cervical cancer is preventable
If you are eligible for screening, make sure your test is up to date. If you’re unsure when you last had a Pap or HPV test, contact your healthcare provider.
Understanding symptoms — even though they often appear later — helps ensure early medical attention when needed.
Open conversations help reduce stigma and improve prevention, especially for young people and parents.
Help raise awareness by sharing trusted, evidence-based information with friends, family and colleagues.
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is committed to improving cancer prevention, early detection and access to care in Bermuda and to supporting global efforts to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem.
This Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to take action for their health.
